Clear communication between candidates and interview panels is more than just that. There are a number of body language, tone, and appearance factors that influence an interview panel that I think most of us are aware of. (If not, you can find them in this book ) .

Although clear communication is extremely important,  it’s only important if you are communicating the right information, so if you think that a panel wants to hear about (A) when they really want to hear about (B) you can see how it would not matter how well you communicated on this, as you are in the wrong ball park from the start. I see this time and time again working with people who have been unsuccessful or have preconceived ideas about what they think the panel wants to hear.

A really important thing to remember is exactly this. You need to do your research on the organisation as well as on yourself, and your key skills and attributes so that you can match them up when the day comes.

The guide covers all types of different scenarios. It is good to get you thinking about skills and demonstrated behaviours from different jobs or previous employment or sporting clubs that you have been involved in.

One tip that helps a lot of people, just start thinking about when you have demonstrated skills that are desired by the fire service. When they pop into your head, note them down. So, by the time the interview comes around, you will have a number of great answers that you would not have been able to recall on the spot.
